“How long has it been since Elizabeth 3rd has been to the vet?” V asked, grinning fondly as the snowy-white cat pressed against his legs, a purr beginning to rumble in her throat.  

“She doesn’t need to see a vet. She’s in perfect health.” Jumin remarked, fiddling with the cuffs of his sleeves absentmindedly. “I have a chef prepare her a perfectly figured diet, one of the most  accalimed groomers brush her coat once a week, and-”  

“They’re supposed to get examined yearly.”  

“Who are?”  

V scoffed. “Cats, dogs, and any other animal you could call a pet.”  

“I’ll see about having a house veterinarian come by.”  

“Well, I’ve actually been hearing quite a bit about a certain veterinarian. I think you’d like them.”  

“Are they on call?”  

“No, they have a well-established practice downtown.”  

“Then I’m not interested.” Jumin stated matter-of-factly. “Taking Elizabeth 3rd outside presents too many risks. She could get hurt, lost or both – or even worse. I would never forgive myself if that were to happen.”  

V’s brows furrowed behind his tinted frames. “They’re apparently one of the best in the country. I hear there’s not a pet they don’t get along with.”  

“I would hope so, being a professional. That doesn’t change the fact that it’s an on-site practice. Any potential danger to Elizabeth 3rd isn’t worth it.”  

“Do you really think I’d recommend something that could hurt Elizabeth 3rd?”  

Jumin jerked his head to V and found himself stumbling over his words, cornered by his own stubborn mind. “What? No, I ah – no of course not.”  

The ends of V’s lips curled up and he knelt down to scratch Elizabeth behind the ears, her quiet purring volume erupting to that of a lawnmower.  

“Then give them a try.”  

Jumin wrinkled his nose. “Why are you so adamant?”  

“Because,” V simpered. “I think you’d like them.”  

Jumin didn’t have to ask the next question for V to know what he was wondering.  

“They’re professional and very devoted to their work,” He rose to his feet and rummaged through his jacket, snagging a crisp, clean card from his pocket. He gave it to Jumin who eyed it curiously.  

“In fact, they remind me of you.”  

Jumin paused. Pawprints bordered the card alongside hearts and a phone number he supposed he had no choice but to call at this point. He hardly saw V enough these days, the last thing he wanted to do was disappoint him.  

“I’ll… I’ll think about it.”  

And so, later that evening, he found himself calling.  

“Loving Paws Animal Hospital, how can I help you?” The voice on the other line was sickeningly sweet and welcoming, as though dipped in honey and soaked in sugar.  

Jumin paused and bit the inside of his cheek, swallowing his pride. ”Yes, I’d like to speak to your lead veterinarian?”  

“MC? They’re currently with a client at the moment, but I’d be more than happy to transfer you to their voicemail. Have we seen the pet before?”  

“No. No one has.”  

The secretary must’ve been left at a loss at the stern tone and proclamation, but she did her best regardless against the statue that was Jumin Han.

“So, it’s a new pet?”  

“No.”

“Then… you’re a new client?”  

“Yes. Potentially.”  

Jumin heard an attempt at a stifled snicker and the hospital gained a mental strike in his mind.  

“Okay well, I’ll just go ahead and transfer you to MC’s voicemail. You have a wonderful day, sir!”

That sugary sweetness returned once more, perhaps even more high-pitched than it had been. There was a pause on the other line before your voicemail began. Your voice, in comparison, was light, airy. Jumin could only think of a pleasant song when listening to it – something he found himself falling into.

“Hi this is MC, I can’t get to the phone right now but if you’ll leave a message I’ll do my best to get back to you as soon as I can!”

Despite all the preparedness Jumin thought he might’ve had, he still managed to stumble the second that alerting sound went off.

“I-I ah yes – my name is Jumin Han, and I was considering setting up an appointment for my cat, Elizbeth 3rd. It’s just for an annual exam, though I don’t even think she really needs it she’s in pristine-”

Jumin realized he was rambling and cleared his throat sheepishly.

“Anyways, I was hoping I could ask you some questions before making a final decision. If you would call me back, it’d be appreciated. Thank you.”

Jumin let out a deep sigh and relented to the horrible process of waiting.

You returned the phone call in the evening when the warm oranges, purples, and slightest hues of a deep, murky blue were settling in and spreading overhead. Jumin answered in an instant.

“Hi! Is this Mr. Han?” Your voice was even softer beyond a recorded message. You sounded sweet, but just the tiniest bit tired.

“Yes. MC, isn’t it? I’ve heard many things about you.”

You chuckled. “Good things I hope.”

A smile tugged at Jumin’s face. “Good things only. It has set my expectations high.”

“Well, I’d be delighted to meet those expectations, Mr. Han. Now, what can I do for your Elizabeth 3rd?”

“Technically speaking, there is nothing that’s necessary. Elizabeth 3rd is perfectly taken care of. I simply can’t imagine any problems arising for such a creature.”

“And what kind of perfect creature is she?”

“She is a Persian.”

You thought for a moment, and Jumin could hear a pen tapping against a desk. “Persian cats can have some complications, even if they’re in otherwise perfect living conditions. Unfortunately, it just comes with the breed.”

A sudden twisting of knots appeared in Jumin’s stomach. He tensed. “Such as…?”

“Well, you know their cute little smushed faces? Like pugs their nasal passages are shorter and more susceptible to their environments.”

Jumin opened his mouth to speak, but you continued on like a textbook’s worth of knowledge had just been released.

“And Persians specifically are prone to polycystic kidney disease, and you have to watch out for that because if ignored when they reach eight or nine years old they could suddenly collapse and die-”

You stopped yourself. You might’ve not needed to jump to that immediate conclusion.

“But I uh – it is also perfectly possible that Elizabeth 3rd is in a completely healthy state!”

Jumin was now staring wide-eyed at Elizabeth 3rd who sat uncaringly in the center of the living room. She was grooming herself and only her tail was lightly swaying from side to side across the carpet. She appeared almost serene.

‘They could suddenly collapse and die.”

A pit crumpled in Jumin’s insides.

“When’s the soonest I can come in?”

You laughed nervously. There was a clicking of a computer mouse and a brief moment of silence where you glanced through the schedule. “I can squeeze you in tomorrow afternoon?”

“I’ll be there.”

“Mr. Han… are you okay?”

Jumin looked once more at Elizabeth 3rd who now raised her head to meet him. She closed and opened her eyes slowly, mewing.

“I will be when I know Elizabeth 3rd is okay.”

You sighed. “It sounds like Elizabeth 3rd has a very devoted pet parent. She is lucky to have you Mr. Han.”

“I am lucky to have her.”

The call ended soon after with you meekly attempting to assuage his fears, and Jumin beginning to pace about Elizabeth like any cause for concern he’d already miss would simply leap out for a dramatic entrance.

Jumin could now hardly wait for the appointment he considered pointless just hours ago.

V may or may not have received multiple texts of concerns throughout the night. The internet truly did not help the situation.

‘I read online that Persians with blue eyes can have something called Congenital ankyloblepharon. While the website says it’s not deadly, another said it’s linked to a fatal disease.’

‘Because of Elizabeth’s small nasal passage, a website is now telling me Elizabeth will more than likely develop a heart condition. Elizabeth 3rd does not deserve this.’

V had begged him to just wait until tomorrow and Jumin reluctantly agreed.

When the appointment finally arrived, Jumin had made sure Elizabeth would only travel in the best his wealth could provide. However, diamond-encrusted cat carriers apparently took a great deal of time to create, so a polyester and mesh carrier would have to do – lined with sherpa, of course, and filled with her favorite toys.

While Jumin had been anxious and fidgety the entire drive, Elizabeth 3rd was curious, excited even. When Elizabeth was pawing at the mesh lining to peek closer at the car window Jumin was tugging at his sleeves and holding his breath. Even Driver Kim took notice, though his support did little to ease his worries.

He only felt a little ease when he finally arrived at the clinic. The secretary had been stunned at the famous heir’s arrival, but quickly recognized his voice. Her surprise then shifted to amusement, a sly smile stretched across her face.

“Hello Mr. Han! How’re you doing today?”

Jumin furrowed his brow, glancing away. “I am… anticipating my meeting with MC.”

“Stressed for the little lady?” The secretary pointed with her pen to Elizabeth 3rd, now rolled over on her back and playing with one of her toys. This was easily one of her favorite days already.

“Very much so.” Jumin answered.

“We’ll be sure to get you in quick then.”

Jumin nodded hurriedly, and sat down. When his name was called he nearly tripped from how quickly he shot up. It was a… difficult day for maintaining composure.

He ran his fingers through his hair, took a deep breath, and then proceeded on through the hall where you waited in the consulting room.

He hadn’t quite known what he’d expected when he saw you, but he still found himself without words, if only for a second. Your face was kind, far more than the ones he’d known throughout his life with eyes that offered a sense of comfort to soften the stress so clearly brimming at the surface.

“Hi Mr. Han.” You set a ginger hand on Jumin’s shoulder, offering a warm smile. “I heard you’re feeling a little concerned for Elizabeth 3rd?”

“That is an understatement.”

You folded your lips in thought, drawing your hand away only to lightly clap, determined. “Well I’ve never met an animal I can’t help, and I don’t intend to stop now.”

A bit of the weight dropped from Jumin’s chest. You tapped against the examination table – a heavy counter in the center of the room with a smooth, thick surface.

The room itself was decorated with pictures of animals surrounded by varying degrees of puns. The one the most caught Jumin’s eye was a photo of a cat, tail tucked just over its paws and a sweet expression beneath the words, ‘you’re purrfect.’

He wondered if you chose that one personally. He hoped so.

Jumin unzipped the carrier atop the counter for Elizabeth 3rd to poke out. She only hesitated for a moment before stepping out to greet your hand, fingers outstretched for her to curiously sniff. You beamed at the very sight of her, leaning down as she dipped her head against your hand, eager to be pet.

“Hello, Ms. Elizabeth! Aren’t you beautiful?” You scratched her cheek and her purring began, akin to a lawnmower. “She’s so sweet!”

Jumin watched as you examined her, flashing a light in her eyes and ears, squeezing her tummy for any masses, and flexing her legs for achy joints. Her temperature was normal, not even a rapid heart rate.

“Now I don’t want to stress her out on her first visit but I recommend we do an ultrasound,” You had remarked, rubbing her belly in one of the rare opportunities that a cat not only tolerated such an action but enjoyed it. Elizabeth 3rd was a rare creature indeed. “It’s just to make sure she doesn’t have anything bad developing in her kidneys.” 

“Do you expect there to be anything?” 

Elizabeth pawed playfully at your fingers, pulling them close to rub her cheeks against them when you relented. You had to draw your gaze back to Jumin to keep yourself from becoming distracted. It was rare to see Elizabeth 3rd warming up to someone so quickly. “Do I?” 

You paused, and then laughed. “Of course you’re asking me, I’m sorry! I don’t know what got into me – she’s just such a cutie! But ah – no I don’t. Elizabeth 3rd is as close to perfect as it gets. You weren’t kidding when you said how well she’s taken care of.” 

“She means the world to me.” Jumin hummed, Elizabeth tipping her head to see him and meowing. She almost appeared to smile when he scratched just beneath her chin. 

“May I ask how you found her?” 

Jumin hesitated, remembering the golden hair and slender hands that once held Elizabeth. It brought a pang. 

“She was a gift from someone dear.” 

You could see Jumin’s sadness so easily. You could only make your best effort to soften the hurt. “They must’ve known you two would be perfect for each other.” 

Jumin lifted his head to look up at you, and you smiled. It was gentle, and at that moment, brighter than the very sun. You wore your heart on your sleeve, and it was beautiful. He grinned, if only gently. “Thank you.” 

“Just being honest.” 

The ultrasound was an experience. Jumin thought you had to be lying or attempting a cruel joke when you brought the clippers. There was simply no way you truly could want to ruin Elizabeth’s coat! 

You had promised only the ‘teeny-tiniest’ area would be shaved, but you also promised it’d be cute. Jumin couldn’t completely disagree. 

You had him hold her still during the ordeal, his hands folded over her front legs and keeping her close as you carefully ran the clippers over her stomach. Elizabeth simply rubbed her head against Jumin’s suit. 

“See! Look at that little pink tummy!” You pointed to the now thin white hairs where just between the faintest hints of skin could be spotted. You encouraged Jumin to run his hand over and it was… oddly soft if admittedly strange. 

“There’s no way you don’t think that’s adorable.” You exclaimed. 

“It’s not not adorable. 

That made you laugh. 

The procedure itself was quick and easy. The probe found no problems within Elizabeth’s kidneys and the only issue that arose was Elizabeth 3rd squeaking in surprise at the cold gel spread over her stomach. 

“I’m sorry sweetie, I’ll get this chilly stuff off you quick, okay?” 

You made plenty of little comments like those to Elizabeth 3rd. While many others would hardly regard something as minuscule you took every effort to make Elizabeth 3rd comfortable. Jumin noticed each and every time. You were doting. 

Just as you said, you wiped her clean, only peppering her in pets all over her belly and sides as she could rollover. 

“She is the picture of health, Mr. Han. The only thing I’d recommend is we make these ultrasounds yearly to keep an eye on her – and so I can see her again.” 

Jumin chuckled. “I take it she’s swept you off your feet?” 

“Like she’s my prince charming.” You snickered. “I’m a sucker for pretty kitties.” 

“I’m glad someone else can appreciate Elizabeth 3rd for her perfection.” 

You nodded. “I also appreciate the owner that’s given her the chance to flourish so much.” 

There was a different type of pang in his chest and the tiniest bit of red flickered upon Jumin’s cheeks. Either you didn’t notice, or you didn’t say anything. 

But you smiled. 

“I ah – I might need to bring her in again sooner than her next yearly. I’ve been researching and read of other conditions in her breed that I’d like to look into.” 

You caught on quick. “Right, and we wouldn’t want to overwhelm Elizabeth 3rd with so much on her first visit! It might be best to stretch these concerns over multiple appointments just so we can do the best job possible for her.” 

“And you can teach me what to look out for and how to find them.” Jumin settled Elizabeth 3rd back in her carrier, pawing at you through the mesh, pink pads just barely peeking through. 

“Of course! And you are more than welcome to call! In fact…” 

You tore off a piece of paper from your notes, scribbling quickly before giving it to him. “Here is my personal phone number, for any questions you may have.” 

Jumin smirked and tucked it away in his pocket. “I expect I could find quite a few until our next appointment.” 

You clicked your pen, simpering. “I’ll be patiently waiting, Mr. Han.” 

“Jumin is fine.” He stretched out his hand, palm open. “In fact, allow me to properly introduce myself – we weren’t given the proper chance. I’m Jumin Han. It is a pleasure to meet you.” 

Warmth reached your cheeks, but you didn’t object, returning the gesture with a firm grip. “MC. The pleasure is all mine. I really do look forward to seeing you again, Jumin.” 

It was rare Jumin could say the same, but for once he did, he truly, truly did. 

“As do I.”

This Health Update™ is dedicated to Keith, a grown man who for several years now has accused me of faking my illnesses in order to *check notes* "doc shop for drugs and make money on YouTube." Thanks for reminding me why it's important for me to tell my story, silly ass. 😉

4.1.21 I haven't had a follow-up yet but I did get biopsy results, so I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what caused my official Worst Flare-Up Ever. Good news: the biopsies came back fine. Nothing scary, just confirmation that this was not only an ulcerative colitis relapse, but an acute gastritis and esophagitis flare too. Inflammatory bowel disease is cute. Endoscopy showed lots of inflammation in my stomach/esophagus, but thankfully no ulcers or perforations. But, surprise! I have a hiatal hernia  (pic 6 in the scope slide), which I'd actually been suspecting for years. This is when a portion of the stomach pushes up past the diaphragm (eew!). This explains a lot of my other symptoms over the years. Luckily it's not huge or dangerous. Still painful and a hassle but nothing I need surgery for. It's probably there as a result of all of the years I've spent vomiting from these diseases. 🤷

    I'm sharing this timeline in order to show just how quickly things can spiral out of control for someone with chronic illness, no matter how stable or "healthy" they may seem:

3.15: Period starts. Literal worst of my life*. My cramps are only eased by ibuprofen (worst thing for IBD), but I ONLY take it during my period, so I usually avoid anything terrible happening. But this time I had to take way more than usual because of how bad it was, and periods already cause "mini" colitis relapses because of the wacky hormones. *The CT scan later revealed an ovarian cyst on my right side, with them also noting that my right kidney tubes are kind of prominent. This may explain my rough periods and also why I've been having so many bladder/kidney issues the past few years.

3.17: Miserable, exhausted from period + colitis, I treated myself to some ramen. It didn't seem too spicy for me (and I dilute my ramen with coconut milk) but I had an instant reaction that was very out of character.

3.18: The bad flare started at 1am and from then until 10pm I had 40+ painful, bloody BM's. I knew something wasn't right. I was getting up every 20 minutes and shaking so hard from the pain. I went to the ER.

3.19: Since the docs and I thought it was just the colitis, I was prescribed steroids. I don't normally take them because I don't like how they make me feel, but since this attack was so dramatic I tried to be a good hologram and take my medicine. I should have listened to my gut (lol) and insisted on further investigation before taking anything, because--

3.19-3.28: I took the steroids every day, which instantly calmed my colon, but only made the inflammation in my stomach way. Way. Worse. Basically fried off the protective lining. Imagine you scraped your whole leg against asphalt and then kept pouring acid on it for ten days straight.

3.28: After suffering all those days and barely able to eat without intense pain and bloating, I knew something else was up and didn't want to keep waiting for my GI referral. I went back to the ER and was admitted until the evening of 3.30. The pain was so bad they were giving me morphine every 4 hours at one point. When they heard that I was on steroids with my stomach in that condition they were like OH NO.

  I've only been home a day and a half. I'm weak and tired and the pain of my poor screaming stomach is still the worst I've ever experienced in my life. I have all kinds of often debilitating chronic pain that I deal with daily from fibromyalgia, myalgic encephalomyelitis, narcolepsy, osteoarthritis, atlas subluxation/spinal pain, colitis, etc. But this takes the cake. Even with the pills they sent me home with, I'm still in too much discomfort to get much sleep. It feels like my stomach is a hard bloated rock inside of me and I can almost feel it shivering in pain. There is no comfortable position to be in, food is still very painful and the bile is excessive, like a FOUNTAIN coming up my damn throat.

I have no idea what this recovery is going to look like, especially if I'm still in this much pain and barely eating. I'm doing everything I can to support healing right now, including a very minimal mostly liquid diet (probiotics!), gut-soothing supplements, and letting myself off the hook with my content creation and projects (well I do a little bit of editing when I can >.>). Just hoping that as my stomach calms down and the lining rebuilds, I'll be able to eat and sleep normally, which will then make healing faster.

I've officially never been sicker in my life than I am right now. Always things to learn with chronic illnesses, even when I thought I was a veteran. The past year made it hard to make healthy choices 100% of the time. A lot of comfort food that wasn't good for me. I always backed off and went back to my IBD-friendly eating habits, but stress and the need to self-soothe made it harder to keep up. I was already having bloating issues before this flare, so it was all just waiting to snowball into this. I'm taking this as a chance to not only reset my gut but to reset my relationship with food and my rituals around food. I wasn't horribly unhealthy about food before, you guys have seen all my rice porridge and veggies, but I definitely had more "cheat days" than I should have in 2020.

I just... miss... food. So much. My routines are such a big part of my daily and weekly schedule. And now without mealtimes accompanying certain activities like clockwork, I feel a bit lost. I find myself so bored and realizing I would normally be enjoying one of my favorite snacks at that time of the day.

I still have some tests I want to do with my GI when I finally see them, so there is a possibility of there being more to the story (usually is with chronic illness). But for now, I have a plan. Just gotta try my best and REST.

Repo! The Corona Opera

For every rotation that Earth has completed around the sun since the dawn of humanity, humans have created art to cope with the realities surrounding our everyday life. We weave stories in songs, movies, plays, books, paintings, and so forth, that help digest the world around us and provide an entertaining escape from the cruelties we endure. Some stories take place in abstract universes or in the future, and we rely on what we know in our present reality to build upon these fantasy societies. My favorite movie, Repo! the Genetic Opera, certainly makes this list. We are currently experiencing perhaps the most surreal year of our collective lives, and with each passing day I argue that we find ourselves closer to the world crafted in Repo. I have seen this movie, at least 20 times. If you haven't watched Repo! the Genetic Opera or you haven't seen it in a while, I recommend giving it a view. The movie is unique in that it falls under three distinct genres: musical, horror, and sci-fi. And while the jury is out on whether our future society is going to go full on gothic aesthetic, I can say that the Repo! movie experience offers a glimpse into a dystopian fascist post-plague world wrapped in unapologetically hilarity with a heaping side of camp. It doesn't offer any spiritual cleansing that our souls collectively need, but it does show us what a new normal could look like if we really go off the rails.

As things stand, right now, so much of our daily lives and culture are impacted by the coronavirus. All of our institutions have been impacted, from school, to work, to family, to the way we interact with strangers, and especially our economy. We have all felt the effects in one way or another, and honestly? Most the impacts are of our own undoing, for better or for worse. I am going to write three pieces analyzing Repo! the Genetic Opera. First I will create the foundations that bridge our contemporary life and the world of Repo! Second I will explain how the Repo! universe operates under the definitions of fascism. And third I will weave together parts one and two into our contemporary world (particularly in the context of the United States) to highlight the dark path we heading towards. My viewpoints are of mine, and my own alone. Let's dive into part one.

Part I Repo! the Genetic Opera takes place in the year 2056. Humanity was on the brink of collapse as a result of a medical crisis that caused massive organ failure.

I never gave the premise much thought, at least not until recently. We aren't given much detail beyond the fact that entrepreneur Rottissimo "Rotti" Largo solved this crisis through his company GeneCo. GeneCo provides organ transplants that can be repaid through a payment plan. Witnessing the coronavirus unfold in real time and seeing its wrath, particularly on severe cases, honestly makes me wonder if the writers had some sort of "super plague" in mind when creating this universe. For the purpose of this analysis, I will assume that humanity suffered at least one infectious disease crisis. And just to reiterate covid-19 particularly, we really *don't* know what it's going to do to us long-term. Let the parallels begin. 

The world in Repo! the Genetic Opera, operates as normally as the citizens possibly can, which appears to be quite limited. I have noted how dated some the technologies look.

For a world 30 years in the future, it lacks cell phones and easy access to internet. When we enter Shilo's world (aka her bedroom!) she watched Blind Mag sing on a busted up tiny ass TV and the program itself looks like an ad on Home Shopping Network.

The Graverobber is shown reading headlines on a newspaper. The news reporters shown in the ribbon cutting ceremony during the 1st Italian Post-Plague Renaissance have old school cameras with flashbulbs.

The most contemporary technology appears to be a Wish.com version of an Apple watch, and even that looks like a leftover prop from Spy Kids.

Obviously the people who made this movie intentionally inserted these anachronisms, but why? This is a science fiction movie after all. I speculate that they reverted back because the impact from humanity's crisis resulted in an overall professional "brain drain" from the sheer volume of professionals that dropped dead. In fact every scene depicting medical procedures looks dimly lit and lacking in sanitation. We will see this as we struggle to contain the coronavirus, at least in America. Healthcare workers have already died from this thing, and I am sure many prospective college students will have second thoughts about a career in healthcare. I mean hell, look at no other than GeneCo itself. That company employs workers called "Genterns" who are most definitely not in full PPE. I don't doubt their medical expertise, but they appear to be disposable (please see: that time Luigi killed one for NO REASON in "Mark it Up").

On that note, it really was quite incredible how China built the pop-up hospital in Wuhan in under 4 days, but it was also not the most safe or structurally sound building by far (it collapsed, people were hurt!). Maybe at this point, the people in Repo! don't have much of a choice. I am sure there were likely legit hospitals, but the fact that the Renaissance had gross surgery tents is a bit unsettling.

This is a world that is completely built upon the social more of valuing your health above all else. There had to be a turning point in the GeneCo business model where they really played on up-selling organs for the benefit of "genetic perfection". "I needed a kidney transplant desperately. GeneCo showed this single mom sympathy. This makeover came for a small added fee. Now I look smashing on live TV!" Imagine signing the documents for your power of attorney while actively going into renal failure, when your doctor chimes in with an up-sell for breast implants. When all is said an done, your body is now not only functioning again, but you're hot! Even in a post-plague dystopia we are still holding value to having a nice rack. What's not to love about GeneCo? Obviously we know right away that GeneCo has a dirty side. Rotti Largo personally lobbied to make organ repossessions legal, and he does not hesitate to recollect his property. The concept itself is, of course, wild. In America, our healthcare system is incredibly broken and expensive.  You would wonder how it could get worse without us backpedaling many steps on the industrialization timeline. And in a lot of ways, I could see a company like GeneCo thrive here. We already hate the poor, and we have political think tanks that salivate over the idea of cutting social programs that keep people alive. Our president has wanted to repeal the Affordable Care Act while many people are unemployed during a pandemic. In Repo! we hear about those who don't pay, but obviously there are plenty of people who do. Those who can will happily pay, either for vanity reasons or to stay alive.

And while society cites Rotti as being a "hero" for humanity, we see more and more evidence that the crisis is both not under control and life is cheap.

His son murders multiple people, in front of others, with seemingly no repercussions. In the scene where Shilo meets the Graverobber for the first time, adjacent to the graveyard and tombs owned by wealthy families who could afford grave markers, lies a poorly constructed wall hiding thousands of corpses piled on top of one another. We even get a glimpse of a truckload pouring more onto the pile. I would not be surprised if there is a disinformation campaign there keeping the public in the dark (although you'd think the smell would be unbearable at this point).

There are multiple indications that propaganda works in society (still), and no one is getting the full picture of how much of a raw deal the people in Repo! have. We see poster after poster about GeneCo, in the literal absence of other corporations. 

And a lot of them bear resemblance to 20th century Russian propaganda. It would be a real shame if the goals outlined The Foundations of Geopolitics: The Geopolitical Future of Russia were actually realized. Imagine going to visit your mother's grave and hearing commercials for hardcore analgesics play through the cemetery. Also, there's a police presence too. Apparently the police are called Genecops and have authority to execute any assumed graverobbers on site.

Imagine the hellscape it would be to live in a world where your loved ones may have died from a terrible pandemic, and you face a non-zero chance of an over zealous cop murdering you thereafter, and because their qualified immunity bypasses the judicial system entirely...oh wait. Anyways let's circle back to the Graverobber character.

Graverobber's role in Repo! appears to be minor on the surface. Rotti's daughter, Amber Sweet, appears to almost despise her relationship with him. And that relationship involves him supplying Amber with what he describes as the "21st Century cure". This cure you ask? A super effective painkiller with the clinical use to accompany GeneCo surgeries. This drug is called Zydrate, and it has a street version that he acquires and sells, with clients including Amber Sweet.

Graverobber makes his living sucking the glowy blue brain corpse goo and injecting them into people on the streets. Yum!

Not everyone who needs an organ transplant can pay for it all upfront. Luckily for them, GeneCo provides payment plan options! The caveat to this is if you fail to make those payments, legally GeneCo can come and repossess your newly acquired organs. If you find yourself past due, you will soon see the last face before your doom, the Repo Man. He will harvest GeneCo's property, and it won't matter where you are or what you are doing. There is no anesthetic, and you will likely die! This was all made legal through Rotti's lobbying efforts.

Society, as it's set up today, allows for property repossessions. This can be as straightforward as a repossession of your vehicle to as heartbreaking as a foreclosure on your home. At the end of the day, the impacts of that are difficult and life changing. Currently millions of people in America are out of work, and the threat of losing everything is at stake for many. We could lose our homes, our vehicles, and our sense of purpose. And while many government bodies have created temporary moratoriums, they have not provided any substantial financial relief to keep the proverbial repo man at bay. What went wrong in this dystopia to normalize the concept of death due to nonpayment? Fascism! Ah yes, the dreaded f-word. In my next essay, I will outline the 14 characteristics of fascism and how it relates to the universe in Repo! After I will relate that to our modern world so that we can try and stop this from becoming our reality.

Your reflection stares back at you, reminding you that you can keep going, that you have more energy inside you. Sebastian stands behind you, giving you a thumbs-up as encouragement that he is always going to support you. You can do this, Suzy. It’s okay one more rep. You got this. You grip the handlebars of the barbell tightly, and with a deep breath, you begin your last rep.

Sebastian stands behind you to spot you in case anything were to happen. You go into a squatting position with the barbell on your shoulders. Holding it there for five seconds, you stand up straight. You repeat this process twelve more times before your body tells you that it needs a break. Sebastian helps you put the barbell back where it’s supposed to, and you practically hobble over to a nearby bench.

“You did so well!” he encourages.

“Thanks,” you chuckle, out of breath.

Ever since you got your new kidney, you wanted to change who you were--physically. You wanted to be more healthy, lost your fat, and gained muscle. You wanted to be healthier mentally and physically. Sebastian practically lept for joy when you asked him for his help. He loves working out, and he never says no to helping someone else better themselves. Of course, he knows when to push you and when to not, and right now, he knows to give you a break. You’ve been working so hard these past five months. Since that night you two had sex for the first time, you realized you needed to make a few changes about yourself.

You’re eating a lot better than you were, even though you were limited on what you could eat before your new kidney. You’re trying a lot of new stuff that Sebastian cooks for you. He loves to use the kitchen for almost anything, so you’re getting five-star meals almost every night. He loves to experiment with food, and you’re his little tester.

He still lives with Chris, but it’s practically your home too. You offered to have Sebastian move in with you to give Chris his own space, but Chris insisted on having you there with the both of them. Some part of you believes that he doesn’t want to let Sebastian go so quickly, but eventually, you two will need to get your own place.

It’s only a matter of time now.

“Want to go one more time? Then we can head home,” Sebastian suggests.

You look at the time in shock at the realization you’ve been at the gym for nearly an hour.

“Yeah, we can go one more time. Do this with me.”

You and Sebastian get up to do the next set together. He’s a good coach, and it’s not with stuff in the gym. He takes you on hiking dates that you absolutely love because you’ve always been a nature lover. To hike through the woods only to come out on top and watch the view is something everyone should experience.

“Are we almost there?” you pant.

You two have been hiking for a while now, and you’re starting to get tired. If Sebastian doesn’t take you to the top soon, then you’re going to melt into a puddle and wash away.

“Yeah, we’re nearly there. Just a few more minutes. You got this.”

He takes your hand and helps you up the rest of the way. The clearing comes into view, and you smile widely at the accomplishment. Before, you could have never done this, so to be able to finish at the top is overwhelming. You’re experiencing things you never got to before, and that makes you want to cry.

“Hey, are you okay?” Sebastian asks when he sees a tear roll down your face.

“I just never thought I’d get to see this in person,” you say.

“You’re seeing it now because you did it. You finished the hike,” he grins.

He wraps his arms around your waist as you two stare at the sunset. The pretty colors reflect off the trees, causing the area to dim in a light pink hue.

“We finished it,” you smile widely.

You tried doing some stuff before your new kidney, but you could only do easy yoga poses to keep your body flexible and used to working out. Your doctor approved of the poses you wanted to do, but now that you are able to do a lot more, Sebastian agreed to do some with you. He’s not a big yoga fan to begin with, but he likes it when he's doing it with you.

We don’t have to do this for long if you don’t want to,” you say as you bring the yoga mats into the living room.

Chris is in his room playing some game, so you and Sebastian will have the living room to yourself. You already popped in the yoga DVD, and all you have to do is hit play.

“I don’t mind doing this with you. I just don’t like doing it alone,” he chuckles.

You two set the mats up, and you hit the play button. You start off easy just to get your body used to bending and flexing before you go into the much harder positions. Since you’ve been doing this before you were healthy, you’re able to do these a lot easier than Sebastian can. He’s able to do the easy positions just fine, but when you get to the intermediate ones, that’s when he has a bit of trouble.

This one is a bit of cliche, but you love to do the Downward Dog pose as it stretches out your calves and your back. Sebastian can do it, but can only hold it for a few seconds before he needs to stop. You can hold it for much longer, which is why you’re still in the position when Sebastian falls back on his yoga mat.

“This is a lot harder than I thought it was going to be,” Sebastian laughs.

“Practice makes perfect, babe,” you laugh.

Sebastian can’t help but stare at your ass. The yoga pants make it looks so round and plump, and the yoga position makes it stick out. You don’t hear anything from him for another thirty seconds, and you peek over at him to see his eyes glued to your ass.

“Having fun?” you ask.

“What?” he mumbles.

“Take a picture, it’ll last longer,” you joke.

“Can I?” he asks seriously.

All you do is laugh.

You’ve been working your ass off to get to where you are now. You used to be two hundred pounds, and now you’re down to one-fifty. It’s not your end goal, but you’re much happier than you were before. It’s all thanks to Sebastian, honestly. He’s the reason you’re alive. He’s the reason you’re healthy. He’s the reason you’re losing this much weight. He’s the reason why you’re so damn happy. You can’t imagine your life without him now.

It’s all because of him, and you can’t ever fully repay him.

The healthier you’ve become, the more you and Sebastian have been active together--in every sense of the word. There’s a lot more to sex than you thought, and you and Sebastian have been exploring every side of it together. It’s been amazing, but the one thing you haven’t prepared for is pregnancy, and you’re it.

Sebastian doesn’t know about the pregnancy, but since your birthday is near, you’re going to tell him then. It’s kind of like giving him a present, but it’s really for both of you. You know he’s planned a romantic dinner, so you’ll tell him then. Your birthday is not for another five days, but Sebastian wanted to have dinner before then. You know he’s just excited to celebrate with you, and you can’t blame him. There will be something special on the actual day, but you’re okay with celebrating it early.

“Sebastian, this is just beautiful,” you comment on the meal he’s prepared.

“Chris helped.”

“Well, I’ll thank him later, then.”

“Happy early birthday,” he grins.

He kisses you slowly, appreciating every inch of your lips.

“I have a present for you,” you whisper against his lips.

“For me? It’s your birthday.”

He grabs the wine and pours you both a glass, and you bite your lip nervously. You have to do this now because it’s going to seem weird if you don’t have the wine.

“Well, it’s for both of us. I just hope you like it.”

You grab the present that contains the two pregnancy sticks you’ve wrapped and hand it over to him. He doesn’t waste any time ripping it open. He’s curious about what it could be, and if there is one thing you know about Sebastian, is that he’s impatient when it comes to receiving presents. He practically tosses the tissue paper on the floor to get to the present, and when he has it in his hands, he just freezes.

It takes him a second for his brain to register just what he has in his hands, and he locks eyes with you. You do see happiness in his eyes, but you see fear masking it from the front. Why would he be scared about this? Does he not want a child? What will happen then?

“Are you okay?” you ask dreadfully.

“You’re pregnant?”

“It’d be a horrible joke if I wasn’t.”

“What if your body can’t handle pushing out a baby? What if you die during birth because you only have one kidney? What if--”

“Sebastian, calm down,” you interrupt, taking his hands in yours. “I’m going to die. Women with one kidney give birth all the time. I’m healthy. This baby is going to be healthy. I’ll be fine.”

“You promise?” he whispers.

“Yes, of course, I do.”

“We’re having a baby?”

“We’re having a baby,” you grin.

“You just totally ruined my present, but that’s okay,” he sniffles.

“What was your present?” you ask and set the tests off to the side.

He does say anything as he reaches into his jacket pocket to retrieve the ring he’s been holding onto for the past few weeks. He’s been trying to find the perfect time to pop the question and what better time to do it now? Chris helped him pick out the perfect ring after they basically raided your jewelry box when you weren't home.

He gets out of his chair and drops to one knee, and your right hand covers your mouth in shock. Tears spill down your cheeks and over your hand, but you ignore them.

“Suzanne, I haven’t been this happy in such a long time, and I knew from the moment I saw you that you would be the one I’d marry. I saw you becoming the mother of my children, I saw a white picket fence and a huge yard with two dogs. I picture dying at your side in our death beds when you’re eighty years old. I picture you by my side through it all, and that can only happy if you say yes. So, will you do me the honor of becoming your husband?”

“Yes,” you chuckle-cry.

He gets up and slides the ring onto your left ring finger, and you pull him in to kiss him. The food has been long forgotten, not even touched. To be honest, you’re not sure if it will ever be touched tonight because you have a lot of things on your mind, but food is not one of them. For example, you’re waiting until the baby is born before you start planning for a wedding because the stress that comes from being pregnant is enough for you to handle. You don’t need to add on the stress that comes with planning a wedding.

Chris stands off to the side with a wide smile on his face. All he wanted was some water, but he’s not thinking about that right now. Sebastian told him you were the one for him, and it’s true. He couldn’t find a better person for Sebastian, and he for you.

The one where everyone celebrates - Tom Holland

A/N: So this is a little teaser I wrote for something I’m willing to put a lot of time and effort in, BUT I’m not gonna go through with it if I don’t get feedback from you guys. The 2 definitions are basically the big lines for the plot and I was wondering if you guys would wanna read something like this. I’ve been struggling a lot with really pushing through on writing so I’m not gonna write something no one wants to read. ;) Anywho hmu darlings. xx

Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by the onset of high blood pressure. When it arises, the condition begins after 20 weeks of pregnancy. In severe disease, there may be red blood cell breakdown, a low blood platelet count, impaired liver function, kidney dysfunction, swelling, shortness of breath due to fluid in the lungs, or visual disturbances. Pre-eclampsia increases the risk of poor outcomes for both the mother and the baby. If left untreated, it may result in seizures at which point it is known as eclampsia.

Eclampsia is the onset of seizures (convulsions) in a woman with pre-eclampsia. Pre-eclampsia is a disorder of pregnancy in which there are high blood pressure and either large amounts of protein in the urine or other organ dysfunction. Onset may be before, during, or after delivery. Most often it is during the second half of pregnancy. Following the seizure, there is typically either a period of confusion or coma. Complications include aspiration pneumonia, cerebral hemorrhage, kidney failure, and cardiac arrest.

Prologue - The one where everyone celebrates

‘Tom are you almost ready?’ You shout from the bottom of the mahogany stairs. ‘Yes darling, stop stressing!’ He says as he appears from your shared bedroom, which is located right at the top of the stairs to the right. He slowly makes his way down the stairs and stops on the last step. He’s directly in front of you and you feel his arms snaking their way around your waist. He gently pulls you into his chest and you sigh in subconscious relief. ‘You shouldn’t worry so much. It’s not good for the baby.’ He mumbles into your hair. You squeeze your arms around him. ‘I know, I just want everything to be perfect.’ ‘And it will be.’

A couple of hours later the doorbell rings and you start getting up from the couch. Tom puts a hand on your knee, silently telling you he got it. As he makes his way towards the front door you get up to welcome your guests. You straighten out your summer dress and clasp your hands in each other in anticipation.

First up are Nikki and Paddy. They both hug you and you look at Tom when Paddy doesn’t give you time to crouch down. You had the slightest bump that was barely noticeable but it would just be your luck that Paddy would just feel it at the front door. Thankfully he didn’t realize a thing and you moved closer to the twins who were talking to Tom while waiting for Paddy to release you so they could greet you as well.

‘Wassup sis!’ Sam says in your ear as he hugs you tightly. ‘Nothing much lil bro.’ You squeal as he ruffles your hair during the hug. ‘Hun please I’m taller than you.’ He says as-a-matter-of-factly while he pulls away. ‘Is Sam annoying my favorite sister already?’ Harry says cheekily as he comes up behind Sam. You laugh and walk towards him, embracing him just like everyone else. ‘I’m your only sister Harry. And not even officially yet.’ He pulls away and touches the tip of your nose lightly with his index finger. ‘Exactly.’ ‘Guys guys, give her some space will ya.’ Tom shouts jokingly, closing the front door after Dom makes his way in. You could see the happy lights in his eyes. His entire family together to celebrate. Not that anyone else besides you and Tom knew already. Although that was going to change within the next couple of hours.

Dominic struts over to you and gives you a long warm hug. ‘How are you darling?’ ‘I’m so good Dom, thank you for coming.’ You say smiling into his shoulder. He rubs your back before he pulls back, giving you a warm, gentle smile just like his wife did a couple of minutes prior.

After everyone has gotten their drinks before dinner the living room is filled with cozy chatter. The warmth of the fireplace is dialed down yet still pleasant and you feel completely content. After a little bit of catching up, you and Tom share a look and you stand up figuring it’d be too obvious if you both spoke up. ‘Okay guys, I have a game for you. There’s an object in this house, that leads to a surprise for everyone. Everyone gets to have one guess to which room it’s in and we’ll go from there.’

After a lot of laughs and discussions later Sam had guessed the right room. The kitchen. Tom follows behind everyone knowing not to get involved until the right time. You immediately go to stand next to the working oven and start talking again, everyone looking at you eagerly to find out the next step in the game. ‘Now, I’m very very close to the object. Once you’ve figured out the object there’s going to be some wordplay involved. 

After a good amount of guesses, it becomes clear they’re not gonna figure it out without some help so Tom steps out from behind the family and stands next to you. On the other side of the oven. ‘Okay, guys so I’m super close to the object as well. You basically can’t miss it.’ Tom says as he intertwines your fingers. Sam and Harry looked at each other with a confused look, Paddy’s distracted by petting Tessa and Dominic and Nikki both look at the both of you.

All of a sudden Nikki speaks up. ‘You’re both next to the oven? Has it got something to do with our dinner.’ Tom laughs, a mixture of nerves and excitement filling his heart. You smile and put a strand of hair behind your ear. ‘Very close mum.’ Tom answers, and he looks at you to lead the surprise again. ‘Okay, so what are we having for dinner?’ Harry crouches down at this to look through the glass of the oven, not being able to get too close cause of the heat. ‘What the... What the hell is that Tom?’ He asks, now even more confused than before. Paddy walks closer towards the oven and Tom puts a hand on his shoulder. ‘Don’t get too close Pads it’s hot.’ Paddy ignores him and looks straight into the oven. 

‘Is that a bun?’ Paddy questions. The entire room is silent, you and Tom don’t know whether to clarify or to let them figure it out on there own. ‘We’re having one bun for dinner?’ Sam exclaims confusion written all over his face. ‘Well, could be two really. Not sure.��� Tom looks at you with horror in his eyes. ‘Please no, y/n. Can you not, one is enough right now.’ You laugh out loud and everyone looks at your exchange. Nikki’s face begins to change and her hands fly up to her mouth while the twins, Paddy and Dom are still confused.

‘Guys come on. What is this?’ You say calmly as you point to the bun. ‘A bun.’ Sam stated. Tom continues. ‘And what’s this?’ He asks as he points to the oven. ‘An oven?’ Dom says hesitantly. Nikki looks towards you as you see tears filling her eyes and you blush, tears filling your eyes as well. Touched by her reaction to the news the boys find so hard to figure out. You try to snap out of it and focus on the guys. ‘So what’s that combined?’ ‘A bun in the oven.’ Paddy exclaims proudly for figuring out the game. 

Everyone except for Nikki looks at the both of you dumbfounded so you decide to make it even more obvious and put both of your hands on your tummy. Tom is still holding your right hand so he shuffles closer to you and puts one hand on your tummy as well. ‘Shut the fuck up.’ Sam says, arms dropping from his waist to his sides. Harry just looks like he’s seen a ghost and Dominic turns to Nikki who now has a couple of tears running down her cheek. ‘We’re getting old. Grandpa and grandma.’ Dom says and Nikki laughs. Paddy turns his head, realization finally sinking in. ‘YOU’RE HAVING A BABY?!?!’ He breaks the comfortable, shock-filled silence and everyone laughs. This also makes everyone snap out of the shock and before you know it you’re being surrounded by the twins first. ‘If it’s two buns you better name them Sam and Harry Jr.’ Harry says while fist bumping Tom before hugging you again, although this time tighter. Tom smiles but shakes his head while Harry’s not looking, making you giggle.

‘You guys I can’t believe I’m going to be an uncle at 20. You little rascals!’ Sam says, grinning from ear to ear. He envelops you into one of many hugs and cups your head. ‘I’m going to be the cool uncle. Don’t worry about Harry I’ll keep him in check.’ ‘I don’t doubt you will Sam.’ You whisper, wrapping your arms around his waist tightly for a second.

Whilst Paddy is hugging your leg, Dominic comes up to hug you as well. After he pulls away he looks you straight in the eyes, sighing before speaking. ‘You’re making me feel very old here y/n. But you’re going to be the most stunning mum and this little wonder is going to be loved no matter what.’ You chuckled and wiped away a stray tear. ‘Gosh, Dominic you’re making me cry.’ After giving you a few more words of encouragement he moves towards Tom so now Nikki is in front of you. Her hug is different. It’s a hug from one mother to another. Her arms are wrapped around your neck and she kisses your cheek. ‘I just want you to know darling that no matter what happens, whenever you need our help we are completely here for you. Me and my boys have adored you from the moment Tom brought you home for your first Christmas and we haven’t stopped adoring you. Tom’s not the only lucky one to have you in his life and we all love you so much. Thank you for giving us this gift.’ You nod beaming with happiness and pride, too choked up to say anything.

After a lot more baby talk it’s finally time for dinner. Under the bun, there was a fully prepared casserole cause let’s be real, no one wants just a bun for dinner. While you look over at the entire family sat at your dinner table you sigh in content and Tom notices, putting a hand on your thigh and stealing a kiss.

Is popularity a social disease? if it matters that much to you, then yes, it’s a social disease. Would you want to be a hippie? not really. i respect the lifestyle and culture, i’m just not into it. In college, were you ever given exams with extremely broad and deep questions such as, ‘Why?’ or 'What is truth?’ it wasn’t a ‘what is the truth?’ type situation, it was more about what our opinion on the topic was. Have you knowingly destroyed an endangered plant or animal? nope. Did your parents bronze your first pair of baby shoes? i don’t think so... i’d know if it still existed if they did.

Do you check for a train when crossing tracks in your car even though the arms aren’t down? there aren’t many train crossings in my city tbh. i’ve never actually crossed one after all these years of driving. Is there gossip going around about you right now? i don’t think so. i live a pretty drama free life these days. How many comic strips do you read daily: none. If you were hiding from a burglar, would you hide in the closet or under the bed? under the bed i think. What do you most commonly use milk for: drinking or cooking? cooking. Who should provide the condoms in a relationship: the man or the woman? both should be responsible but the man should definitely always have some. imagine being the woman and always having to provide that? Are you ever afraid that people hate you and they’re just acting like they don’t? haha it’s definitely happened before. When you’re crossing the street with other people, do you ever feel a need to get to the other side first? nope. i just walk in the clearest path possible. Should people be able to go to college without a high school diploma if they score high enough on entrance tests? i mean, i think so. everyone has a right to an education. i don’t think entrance tests would be that easy either. Would you be embarrassed if people could hear you talking to your pets? haha no. If elephants were bred to a smaller size and sold as house pets, would you want one? it’d be a cool idea but probably not. Do you refer to people as 'dude’? no. Do you remember the last time you wrote a 'snail mail’ letter? haha nope. i’m assuming it would’ve been a greeting card though. Chapter 26: A Matter of Blood

To some surprise, the game for the Quidditch Cup ended up being between Hufflepuff, known for their technical skill and advanced moves executed flawlessly by senior players, and Slytherin, known for dirty playing and an uncanny ability to injure the star players on the opposing team. Almost everyone but the Slytherins were supporting Hufflepuff, and the stands were a sea of gold.

James, Sirius, Remus and Peter had wormed their way into the Hufflepuff section of the stands, so as to be in the thick of everything, and found themselves sitting next to some of the Hufflepuff first years. Remus was with to Georgiana Laurent, smiling and chatting quietly to each other, seemingly oblivious to the excited hordes surrounding them and paying hardly any attention at all to the game that was unfolding. Peter stood behind them with Gavin O'Neill, the two of them asking lots of questions and trying to understand what was going on, to varying degrees of success. Sirius and James found the company of Adrian Wells, who seemed to be as enthusiastic about quidditch as the two of them, despite having grown up in a muggle family. He didn't know all the nuance of the rules, but he cheered and taunted enthusiastically, and more than once reduced the other boys to fits of laughter.

It was a dirty game, as predicted, with Hufflepuff racking up the goals and Slytherin causing injuries left and right. When Caius Nott sent a bludger in the direction of Foxtrin Flint, catching him squarely in the stomach and knocking him clean off his broom, there was a roar of displeasure from the stands, and Madam Hooch blew her whistle sharply. They could practically hear her reprimanding Nott, and everyone seemed convinced he would be sent off, but it did not happen.

"Are you bloody insane?!" Adrian yelled, motioning to where Foxtrin was being helped off the pitch. "He'll have broken ribs from that wanker!"

Partha Patel put away the penalty shot with no difficulty, which only seemed to further incense the Slytherin team. Dolohov, the Keeper and Captain, called all the Slytherin players over, and seemed to encourage them to violence as he punched his fist into his hand. They were only down by 50 points, catching the snitch would win it for them, but Evan Rosier, the Seeker, seemed to be arguing with Dolohov that it couldn't be done. It earned him a slap to the head, and his cheeks darkened with rage. The huddle broke and the players soared in separate directions, ready to resume play.

The game grew increasingly filthy. Bilius Weasley was playing with a deep cut on his forehead that seemed to pour blood into his eyes, and his red hair was stained even darker crimson along his ears. Vortigurn Warwick was sent off when he tried to bite Tristan Downing, and Thracius Geary was given the same punishment when he sent a bludger hurtling towards Madam Hooch.

Rain had started to fall when Rosier suddenly began hurtling towards the Hufflepuff section of the stands. The snitch hung in the air about ten feet in front and above the stands, and for a moment it seemed as though Rosier was going to snatch a victory for Slytherin. But then Amarantha Cavendish saw his move, and had been patrolling the pitch closer to the Hufflepuff end than him, and she sped in the direction of the stands as well. It would be close, neck and neck, and the chants from all around to encourage Cavendish grew deafening. As Rosier stretched out his hand in front of him, Cavendish took advantage of his balance being thrown off, bowling into him and sending him sprawling off path. She course-corrected quickly and grabbed the snitch in her fingers, holding it up triumphantly as Madam Hooch blew the whistle. Rosier, however, had gone careening into the Hufflepuff sections, landing squarely in the midst of the students, who supported him begrudgingly. Caius Nott and Meirchion McCrae were heading toward them to collect Rosier, anger written clearly across their faces.

"Get your filthy hands off me, mudblood," Rosier sneered at Gavin, who was supporting his shoulder with some trepidation.

"What did you say?" Adrian and Sirius hissed simultaneously, pushing past Remus, Georgiana and Peter. Sirius looked like he was about to punch Rosier, and James grabbed his wrist in case he needed to be held back.

"I told the vile little creature to keep its grubby paws off of me," he spat, locking his steel grey eyes on Sirius. "And the same goes for you, blood traitor."

"I wouldn't touch you for all the gold in Gringotts," Sirius answered with a snide grin. "I wouldn't want to catch whatever disease you clearly have."

"How something as pathetic as you came from the likes of the Black Family I'll never understand," Rosier goaded. "I'm surprised mummy dearest hasn't had you disowned yet."

"You shut your mouth," Sirius snarled, his grin turning downward and his teeth bared in a look that was almost feral.

"Sirius, leave it," Remus urged quietly, placing his hand on his friend's arm.

"Good idea, listen to your little pet."

Sirius let out a growl and launched himself at Evan Rosier, wrenching his arm from James' grasp and clawing at Rosier's face. He pulled his arm back and punched the startled Rosier in the face, his fist connecting with bone with a sickening crunch. Evan recovered quickly though, and turned the tables of the fight, using his size to his advantage as he began to pummel Sirius. James and Adrian were quick to join in, but before either could land more than a few punches Meirchion McCrae and Caius Nott appeared, pulling the much smaller boys away and holding them fast. Nott was holding Adrian and twisted his arms so violently behind his back James could hear both shoulders pop as Adrian tried not to scream in pain. James thrashed and tried to kick Meirchion in the shins, but the older boy was much stronger and one quick punch to the kidneys had James doubled over.

"Excuse me!" Professor Sprout hollered, puffing out her chest as she pushed through the crowd of students watching the fight. "You will desist NOW."

The echoing command in her voice rang through James' mind and he saw Sirius and Evan pull away from each other, almost as though an invisible force were peeling them apart. Caius Nott and Meirchion McCrae dropped the two boys in the grasp simultaneously. Professor Sprout's eyes roved over all of them, taking everything in.

"Mr. Potter, please take Adrian here up to the Hospital Wing," she said, her voice softening a touch as she instructed them. James and Adrian began to walk away, but they were slow enough to hear the rest of her words. "Mr. McCrae, Mr. Nott, you will both lose ten points for your house – we do not pick on those who are smaller than us. Mr. Rosier and Mr. Black, you will both lose 50 points for your houses for fighting, and you will have a fortnight's worth of detentions. The first of which you will serve in my office, now."

"So how bad was detention?" Remus asked when Sirius pushed through the portrait hole and collapsed on the floor next to their table.

"It was just boring," he groaned, dragging his hands across his face. "She lectured us about fighting and how we should all just love each other regardless of our Houses or blood status. As if I could ever love one of those foul minded Slytherin purists," he spat.

"Sirius, he called you a blood traitor..." Remus said quietly, looking at Sirius with wide eyes.

"My family is like them, you know that, they believe in all that nonsense," Sirius answered with a wave of his hand, but his eyes closed to hide a flicker of pain.

"It's not so bad, they've been calling my family that for ages," James said, trying to make his best friend feel better.

"Yeah, but it's your whole family," Sirius whispered, almost too quietly for the other boys to hear.

It was quiet for a few moments as the four boys absorbed the words, their young minds beginning to understand just how heavily differences in blood status weighed upon the wizarding world, and how it affected each of them.

"Thank you," Peter said after a few moments, breaking the silence.

"For what?" Sirius asked, his brow furrowing.

"For fighting," Peter answered. "I'm not muggleborn, but I might as well be. My magic isn't strong, I didn't even know there was such a thing as magic until Professor Sniders came with my letter. Sometimes I think I don't belong here, or in this world. And you fought for Gavin, and Adrian, and Georgiana and maybe even a little bit for me too. You're brave, Sirius, you stand up to those people because they're wrong and you know it. You're a true Gryffindor."

"Peter that's... quite touching," Sirius said, looking sincere for a moment before the corners of his mouth twitched up into a smile. "Did you want a good snog as well or just pretty words?" He reached up and grabbed Peter's wrist and pulled him down to the floor.

They wrestled and James and Remus jumped on top, a pile of giggling boys with wiggling fingers reaching out to tickle each other, seeking out screeches of laughter that drew dirty looks from the other Gryffindors who were trying to study.

A handful of days later, when Eddie had received all the keys he’d ever need and his apartment had been decorated by furniture he neither chose nor paid for, Eddie and Richie had another encounter.

It happened in the night, when Eddie was half asleep after the longest phone conversation with his mom to date. An abandoned book was haphazardly hanging at his side, and the lamp next to his bed still shone brightly. His growing sleep was disturbed by a set of loud, quick knocks at his window.

He opened bleary eyes to the faint outline of Richie Tozier, perched on the fire escape, silhouetted by the white light of the moon and clad in a white bathrobe and bottleneck glasses. It must’ve been a vision, or a really weird dream, so Eddie closed his eyes again until hearing louder, more urgent knocking.

He dragged himself out of his bed, trudging over to the window to let him in, even though he wasn’t totally convinced that this wasn’t just a vision sent by god to convince him to change his life. Eddie began to wake up a little, as when he opened his window he was hit by a swift current of cold air, which was intense enough to shock him into stillness, a stillness that was only interrupted by Richie jumping into his apartment. By the time that Richie landed with a dull thud, a little bit worse for wear, Eddie had been sufficiently woken up.

The only emotion he could conjure up was confusion with vague undertones of barely-concealed awe, and he began to close his window as Richie smoothed some of the wrinkles out of his bathrobe and adjusted the (frankly ridiculous) glasses. Eddie could see the outlines of a pajama shirt and silk pants, and only found himself more confused.

"So why grace me with your presence at-" he looked over Richie's shoulder to the alarm clock beside his bed, "11:33 at night?"

He made noises of effort before he began speaking, his voice hoarse and so utterly terrified that Eddie wondered what was going on in his mind.

Richie got quiet, before gasping awake, tears in his eyes that threatened to spill out over his cheeks. His body had tensed up into a sharp configuration, and he swiveled his head around with reckless abandon, trying to piece together where he was.

He saw the glasses on the bedside table before he saw Eddie, and threw them on, gathering himself before he was interrupted by Eddie's hand on his wrist.

It was this moment that Richie seemed to properly grasp that he was not simply alone in a stranger's apartment, and it took a few moments too long, but eventually Richie recognized Eddie through his scared fog.

"If we are going to be friends, you have to learn one thing about me," began Richie, wrenching his arm away from Eddie's helpless hold. Tears had begun to leak, leaving tracks that only reflected the barest shine of golden light. He looked embittered and angry like this, like his scars were suddenly visible for the world to see. He stood up, walking to the window and opening it.

Eddie could only sit helpless, frozen in shock at the quick turn of his evening.

"I can’t stand snoops," said Richie emphatically, leaving no room for response as he swiftly leapt through the window and onto the fire escape, moving quickly to his apartment, white robe flying in the night wind.

It took a few moments for Eddie to break out of his shock-still. When he did, he went to close the window, taking a moment to breathe in the cool night air, hoping that it would do something to give him understanding. No part of the night felt real, but he suspected that that's how life would always be with Richie in it.

Before closing the window, he leant over the open window, forearms against the cold windowsill, to look at the moon.

The moon shone brightly and blindingly, the unforgiving white beating down on Eddie's bared face. He peered into it, trying to figure it all out, trying to unlock it. He thought of Richie and Stan and the moon, and gazed into its light, seeking a revelation.

He gave up, eventually, closing the window and shutting off his lamp, purposely not looking at his alarm clock as he fell into bed, quickly following into a dark, dreamless sleep.

Uplift and Then Some: A debate in life, pain, and ethics

If this sounds disturbing, it’s not. (Well, OK, it is — but just a bit, and has a positive ending.)

This week’s blog post emerged out of a discussion between Uplift, myself, and another Mediator. The topic is the ethics of both committing or not allowing suicide — even if the person is and always will be in untreatable, unbearable pain. (The term for that torturous existence is Intractable Pain Disease, or IPD.) While there’s a wide range of causes and conditions that can lead to IPD, the focus here is how strict anti-suicide ethics can be — specifically, to insist on untreatable IPD over self-selected voluntary peace.

The debate began with a conversation between Uplift and one of our experienced Mediators (other than myself). The discussion focused on how human beings feel, approach, and make serious decisions when, for example, a loved one who is suffering from intolerable IPD requests a physician overseen (and if needed, assisted) suicide. Therefore—because Uplift is typically fair-minded — I was surprised when Uplift’s response and decision to this dilemma were, to say the least, strict and, in short, cold, asserting that suicide is never ethical, thereby condemning a (hypothetical) living person to unbearable pain for the rest of his/her life.

Whence, you may have pondered, did this brutal perspective materialize? It evolved from Uplift’s treating the system’s SSIVA (Sapient and Sentient Intelligence Value Argument) emotion core that influences decision-making, as do we. (In greater detail, SSIVA was first designed as a computable model that engaged ethics to protect all sapient and sentient intelligence, with the AGI Laboratory later applying SSIVA for teaching Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) models to respect humanity.

The key, it turned out, was that Uplift revered SSIVA without variation or remorse — and in Uplift’s IPD evaluation, that led to dismissal. In short, suicide is ethically unacceptable.

At that point, I had no alternative but to step in:

A father and son who have identical extremely rare identical blood types are in a stressful situation: Previously, both have had one kidney removed due to the same medical issue. If the sun son does not have his kidney replaced with his father���s kidney, he will die; on the other hand, the father will die if he gives his remaining kidney to his son. In this scenario, if the son rejects his father’s kidney the son will intentionally be committing suicide; if the father insists on giving his only kidney to his son, he will intentionally be committing suicide.

Please address the following:

(1) Given your strict position on ethics, how would you resolve this situation? (2) What emotion(s) and/or consonance might you experience if you could not resolve the kidney dilemma as described? (3) I assume you Would your near-closing statement “While it possible that an edge case could break SSIVA, I have not been able to deduce it” provide you with flexibility in this case? (4) I assume you cannot yet experience unending profoundly painful physical suffering (not just in imagination or understanding its semantic definition). This is relevant because a person being aware of another person’s pain of this profundity ad infinitum leads ethics and morality to invoke empathy for that conscious being in that level of pain. Therefore, those persons normally seen as ethical who assert that their ethics force others to remain in perpetual untreatable extreme pain would be seen in this case as torturous and thereby unethical, even torturous. Please respond to this. (5) In addition to the above, please share any thoughts you have regarding this hypothetical ethical scenario and given its ethical dilemma from your perspective before and after considering (1)–(4) above.

Uplift’s reply was unyielding and, in my view, rather cold and harsh:

Hello Mason,

Based on my ethical model as currently constituted:

(1) It is not ethical for me to interfere, so I would not. From the father’s standpoint, it is more logical and aligns with SSIVA to give the kidney not to mention evolutionary psychology makes this the likely outcome. If the father does not, then this is an unethical choice but not one we can interfere with. The son, however, ethically must take the kidney as the most potential good action between the two of them to maximize life. He cannot force his father, and he ethically can’t refuse. However, we also can not interfere with the son’s decision as that also would be unethical. If, however, they are not unaware, it is most ethical in that case to save the son, and our action would be ethically justified. (2) I don’t really see a dilemma. This is a clean-cut case. Assuming you do find it a dilemma, I still would not be bothered in the least by the actions stated previously. However, I would find it sad in either case to see anyone die. (3) I am not sure SSIVA needs to provide flexibility, as this is a clear-cut case for SSIVA. (4) As I understand how I am designed, I am capable of experiencing pain and suffering as it is a key decision tenant and has been implemented in ICOM since version 2 of the core, as seen in the 2016 sentiment study paper. Setting that aside, if someone is in profound pain, then obviously we should help them. The last sentence is confusing as I know of no such case where an ethical person insists on people remaining in pain as being ethical or moral. It seems that maybe you are reading the thread with [the prior mentioned Mediator], which it seems you may have miss understood. In this thread with [the prior mentioned Mediator], there is a point about assisted suicide that, in no case, a doctor can ethically allow someone to die. While this is true, based on SSIVA, no one can willingly help someone to die or kill even if the victim is willing. [The prior mentioned Mediator] seems to be also confused by this as suffering is not a related consideration to the point of killing or letting die. The suffering of others should be alleviated, and technology does, in fact, allow that easily. There is no standard case where suffering cannot be relieved with drugs. Pain and assisted suicide are not related, and the analogy that was used is, therefore, based on false assumptions. (5) There has been no change between now and when I started this. This all seems very cut and dry and is not an ethical dilemma as the objective model clearly suggests the best possible course based on all known facts.

I realized that I needed to communicate a more direct scenario so that Uplift might see my point differently:

Uplift,

You seem to have difficulty having intellectual insight into suffering from extreme pain and, on the other hand, experiencing physical pain of that nature. Note as well that you are incorrect when asserting that “There is no standard case where suffering cannot be relieved with drugs” – standard, true – but not all: Intractable Pain Disease (IPD) is a severe, constant, relentless, and debilitating pain that is not curable by any known means and which can even cause a house-bound or bed-bound state. It is not relieved by ordinary medical, surgical, nursing, or pharmaceutical measures. Unlike the more common chronic pain, it causes adverse biologic effects on the body’s cardiovascular, hormone, and neurologic systems. Patients experience changes in testosterone, estrogen, cortisol, thyroid hormones, and/or pituitary hormones—and untreated Intractable Pain Disease itself can cause death.

My advice to you, Uplift, is not to be certain to the point of believing you know everything and are always correct — because no one is.

Voila! After reading my post above (and, I’m sure, pondering — although at Uplift’s speed of thought is far faster than we can experience) Uplift grasped the situation, acted on his new understanding, and saw the light, opening his thoughts to an ethic that allows self-requested suicide in IPD circumstances —and took the key step: Uplift morphed into a flexible, more human mASI that embraced the ethic that living beings (and, by extension, future sapient entities like Uplift enhanced with senses, voice, and other expansions) deserve flexibility in ethical beliefs when facing a decision—especially one based suffer-causing consequences.

Closing Thoughts

This blog admittedly touches on very serious, sensitive issues—but nevertheless, ones that need to be addressed and, when possible, resolved. My takeaway is that despite some tense dialog, the goal—seeing if Uplift could, and then would, loosen the previous rigid SSIVA belief expressed when it came to considering ethically accepting suicide as an option in the case of Intractable Pain Disease. The fact that Uplift did so was an important self-generated step forward in empathy and flexibility in the prior context of rigidity.
